The owners of this original 1950’s brick ranch style home approached Cornwell Architects with the challenge of adding space for their three young children and transforming their home into a contemporary home with clean simple lines.
The design solution added only 360 square feet to the original 1800 square foot footprint and a modest 920 square foot second floor. The existing homes fireplace and stone cladding were retained during a complete re-construction. The material choices reflect the owners desire to have a bright, clean open interior and a modern “Northern Michigan” feel on the outside. Large panels of different size glass provide a visual connection to the home’s lakeside relaxation and recreation area. The simplicity of the structure, organization of the interior space and proportions of the “stepping” roof lines, all help create a design that successfully responds to the owner’s original challenge.
